Assessment
Make sure to do part 1 and 2 first
Role Plat scenario 2 - Hussein
Key points to practice role play:
• You have previously worked with Indigo Community Services and Health Hub’s Executive Management and have acted as a link to senior Lebanese and spiritual leaders at special events.
• You would like to see an inclusion of prayer rooms and use of multi-lingual signage (These do not need to be solely for Muslims or Arabic speaking cultures, however must be able to accurately address spiritual needs for all religions the prayer rooms would be tailored to. Multi-lingual signage is important for all cultures recognised within the local community. Does Indigo keep data on the cultural diversity it provides services to?)
• You will talk about the importance of using Arabic staff to link management with community leaders on projects of mutual interest.
• You will reiterate the need for sensitivity and appropriate cultural considerations for services aimed at Arabic women.
• As a wheelchair user, you have a personal interest in access and advocate for people with a disability at Indigo forums, irrespective of whether the disability relates to mobility, or sensory disability such as blindness or hearing impairment. You will discuss concerns that Arabic people with a disability are getting lost in the NDIS bureaucracy.
• You will promise to help Indigo Community Services and Health Hub as much as you can.

Approaching the role-play as Hussein requires a blend of preparation, empathy, and active listening. Here's a structured approach to navigate through it effectively:
1. Preparation
- Understand Hussein's Background: Immerse yourself in Hussein's life story, cultural identity, and experiences in Australia to ensure your portrayal is authentic.
- Research: Familiarize yourself with issues facing the Lebanese and broader Arabic communities in Australia, focusing on health, social services, and cultural integration. Understanding the challenges related to disability within these communities can also add depth to your role-play.
- Review Objectives: Keep the meeting's goal in mind - to generate ideas for increasing Lebanese and Arabic community engagement with Indigo Community Services and Health Hub. Your contributions should align with this objective.
2. Engagement and Portrayal During the Role-Play
- Opening: Introduce yourself as Hussein, briefly touching on your background and your connection to the community. Express your gratitude for being consulted and your eagerness to contribute.
- Active Listening: Pay close attention to the questions and comments from others. Use nods and verbal affirmations to show you're engaged, even if you're playing a character with language barriers.
- Sharing Ideas: When discussing your ideas, start with broader suggestions before delving into specifics. For instance, talk about the importance of cultural sensitivity and inclusivity, then propose practical solutions like prayer rooms, multilingual signage, and the engagement of Arabic-speaking staff.
- Addressing Disability: Share your personal experiences and challenges as a wheelchair user, using this perspective to advocate for better accessibility and support for people with disabilities within the community. Highlight the need for sensitivity and the removal of barriers in NDIS processes for Arabic-speaking individuals.
- Combating Stigma: Convey your passion for combating stigma and creating a welcoming environment. Share stories or examples (real or hypothetical) that illustrate the negative impact of stigma and how Indigo can play a role in addressing it.
- Closing Remarks: Reiterate your commitment to helping Indigo serve the Lebanese and Arabic communities better. Express hope for ongoing collaboration and openness to further discussions.
3. Communication Skills
- Clarity and Simplicity: Use clear and simple English, reflecting Hussein's language ability without detracting from the depth of your contributions.
- Body Language: Employ body language that reflects Hussein's attitudes and emotions—gestures that indicate passion for certain topics, or facial expressions that show concern or enthusiasm.
- Emotional Intelligence: Be sensitive to the reactions of others in the role-play. Adjust your tone and approach based on their responses to maintain a constructive and respectful dialogue.
4. Feedback and Reflection
- Seek Feedback: After the role-play, ask for feedback on your portrayal from both observers and participants. This can help you understand what worked well and what could be improved.
- Reflect on the Experience: Consider what you learned from embodying Hussein, including any new insights into the challenges faced by the Lebanese and Arabic communities and how services can be more inclusive.
Role-plays are powerful learning tools, providing insight into others' experiences. By thoughtfully preparing and engaging in the exercise, you'll not only contribute to the objectives of the meeting but also deepen your understanding of cultural competence and empathy in counseling and community services.
