As an independent Counsellor you may join an association. This is not a regulatory authority and may require education in the field from Diploma level.
An association may offer cheaper or group insurance for your chosen field.
The association may suggest guidelines for ethical conduct or a code of conduct. It is not legally binding.

Regulatory Authorities AHPRA
Psychologists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists may be registered with AHPRA.
These are often termed Allied Health Professionals.
These allied Health professions, can be regulated by AHPRA.
Counsellors, independent support workers are not regulated by AHPRA and are therefore not eligible to obtain a medicare rebate but in some cases may be given access to funds through a private health provider.
AHPRA set standards for the conduct of providers who are registered with them. Each of these allied health professions will also have an association.

Challenging legal and ethical questions
How do people in the community know that a Counsellor or Independent practitioner or DSW has no qualifications.
• They can ask to check qualifications.
• It can be obvious in some cases that the person does not get much business.
• There can be tell tale signs of a less than professional approach.

Challenging legal and ethical questions
Some groups or individual support organisations sit outside this framework.
For example consider AA or NA
They are an unregulated association, but does have many years of practice wisdom and have a lot of very defined roles and internal procedures.
