A: Change anc client readiness – last week topic

A: Why not everyone ready to change and go?

Fear of losing control or fear to change.

Not ready.

A: Even if there has been consequences to some habits, it has helped so far. (Alcohol)

Losing sense of who they are, like stop drinking with others, the social aspect has to change.

Counsellors dont have vested connection with clients, our help could be neutral than personal - family and friends can be more influential.

5 Stages of Change Model

  1. Pre-contemplation – denial or don't see there to be a problem. May be unaware of their situation. Not our job to make them aware – like, "YOu actually have a problem!"
  2. Contemplation
  3. Preparation – getting ready for action, setting up roles, talking about what they may expect, that it won't be easy, how they will navigate things, get a clear idea of what this will look like. Brain needs clarity, to know what things look like. Brain is more motivated once it has an idea what it will look like. Basic early steps to help with motivation.
  4. Action – put into practice some of these changes. This is the stage when things may become more motivating. Why more motivated when taking action? Dopamine helps! Start with small changes... when dopamine kicks in and is a hack for motivation. Dont wait for motivation. Take action! Action leads to motivation, not the other way around.
  5. Maintanenance – reinforce small wins. 45:00!!!! Do some reflection – set back, improvements, etc... Turn bad things into learning opportunities = what can I learn from this setback. Be mindful of not doing things two days in a row.
  6. Precontemplation (Not yet acknowledging that there is a problem behavior that needs to be changed)
  7. Contemplation (Acknowledging that there is a problem but not yet ready, sure of wanting, or lacks confidence to make a change)
  8. Preparation/Determination (Getting ready to change)
  9. Action/Willpower (Changing behavior)
  10. Maintenance (Maintaining the behavior change)

Smoking could be a social thing at work during break with other, also stress reliever...

When smoking people breathe much deeper... relaxing.

When clients do things for a long time, even if they are bad habits, they often have had benefits attached to them. Like, "when I drink alcohol it helps me to not overthink."

Don;t take something away from a client and leave them potentially at risk.

What reward do you get from this habit? What alternative could be there?

They may acknnowlegde problem with bad habit but are not ready for change.
